Smocked
Ceramics
After investigating various fabric manipulation techniques, I discovered Canadian smocking and became fascinated with the way undulating, structured forms could be made with a single piece of cloth. These forms were then stitched into 3-dimensional vessel-like shapes and dipped in stoneware slip before firing. The fabric is burnt away in the kiln, leaving only the ceramic exoskeleton, preserved in twisted shapes as they buckle under their own weight in the firing process.
